Building the Ice For A Global Broadcast
It is not the first time that Ice-America has lent its expertise to a large-scale international winter sports production (see our work for Toyota USA’s global “Start Your Impossible” campaign in 2018), but to be involved in such distinguished winter sports programming never ceases to be exciting!
Ice-America’s specialty lies in custom rink installation and delivering ice in temperatures up to 90ºF, so we are no strangers to providing the technical ice infrastructure for commercial film and television projects. As such, we are proud to provide real ice to many of the athletes preparing for competition this year in Italy for supporting intros, teasers, feature segments, and interviews produced by NBC for its global winter sports event coverage.
Like an athlete, the chance to flex our strengths was a welcome opportunity and there are few occasions that test our system’s capabilities.
The demands entailed in working on a major soundstage to build ice are unique from the hundreds of both outdoor and indoor rinks our system supports in an average holiday season. Under hot industrial studio lighting and up against elaborate green screens and infinity walls, considerations like camera angles and surface reflections and even noise control come into increased focus. In a heightened environment like this that typically runs 12-14 hour days, additional quality control protocols and precision in temperature maintenance are implemented to ensure that ice quality does not become compromised and the ice floor proves consistent for both athletes and the filming crew.
Quality ice, after all, is safe ice and our mission—as ever—is to deliver on both safety and reliability. It has been and continues to be a privilege to produce a world-class canvas on which world-class athletes and film crews can work their magic.
